Saying Goodbye to Our Friend Don Bussell

Donald (Don) William Bussell, Jr. passed away on Friday, December 2, 2022, after a long-fought battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born on October 15, 1941, to Donald and Emma (nee Schlager) Bussell.

Don was born and raised in Flint, Michigan, where he attended Flint Central High School. He then went on to graduate from the University of Michigan. He was a “true blue” fan of the University of Michigan football team.

After a career in management at General Motors and EDS, he went on to enjoy his retirement, filling it with many hobbies. He was a longtime member of the Flint Scottish Pipe Band. He was their outstanding Drum Major for many years. Don and his wife, Jean, enjoyed traveling with their motor home. They also enjoyed attending as many U of M football games, band parades, and Highland Games as possible. Don was a member of the Shriners and Masons. He was also an avid golfer and even found himself a retirement job at the local golf course. Don was a very kind-hearted, social, and witty man who had acquired many lifelong friends over the years. He will surely be missed by all.

For many in the piping world Don has epitomized what a Drum Major should be, with his dignified manner and extreme kindness. His impressive visage was the first thing to be seen at the front of, not only Flint Scottish events, but highland events across the midwest. His passing is a loss to the entire pipe band world, and he will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be at Wasik Funeral Home in Shelby Township, Michigan on Friday, December 9th, 2022, from 1pm-2pm for immediate family and 2pm-8pm for extended family and friends with a memorial service starting at 7pm.
